Mother, Son Survive as Lexus SUV Overturns Multiple Times in Lagos Auto Crash
A middle-aged woman and her son narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning when their Lexus SUV overturned several times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the lone accident involved a Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT, which was travelling from Isheri towards Igando when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle.
According to eyewitness accounts, the sport utility vehicle overturned three times during the peak-hour traffic before coming to a halt amid heavy vehicular movement along the busy corridor.
LASTMA operatives deployed within the axis swiftly mobilised to the scene and conducted a coordinated rescue operation. The mother and her son were successfully extricated from the extensively damaged vehicle, sustaining only visible bruises and mild psychological trauma.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division, provided security reinforcement by maintaining effective crowd control and ensuring the integrity of the crash scene throughout the rescue and evacuation process.
Family members of the victims arrived shortly after being notified and conveyed the woman and her son for further medical evaluation and appropriate care.
To prevent secondary collisions and ease traffic congestion along the corridor serving the Lagos State University axis, LASTMA officers coordinated the evacuation of the accidented vehicle with support from Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) officials. The vehicle has been transferred to police custody for comprehensive investigation and necessary administrative processes.
Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed profound relief that the incident did not result in any fatality. He wished the mother and her son a swift recovery while reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management and sustained road safety enforcement.
Bakare-Oki advised motorists to observe prescribed speed limits with utmost discipline and conduct routine mechanical integrity checks, particularly of critical safety components such as braking systems, before embarking on any journey.
The General Manager emphasised that excessive speed, when compounded by mechanical deficiencies, constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways.
