Court Orders Sacking of Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Afolabi Ghandi
In a recent court ruling, the Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Afolabi Ghandi, has been sacked from his position following a legal suit instituted by Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun.
The prince, while appearing as a guest on the TungbaFM Network Political Magazine Program, Politics Naija with Oladigbo Olalekan Efficient monitored by Starnigerianews.com shed light on the discrepancies surrounding Oba Ghandi’s appointment and the court’s decision.
Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun disclosed that the name of Oba Afolabi Ghandi was not originally submitted by the family to the Kingmakers. Instead, the prince alleged that it was the kingmaker and local government who added “Afolabi Ghandi” to the name provided by the family. According to him, the law stipulates that only the family has the right to add to the submitted name, while the kingmakers and local government should play no role in this matter.
Additionally, Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun emphasized that the process of selecting a new King involves various stakeholders, including the ruling house, kingmakers, and the government. He clarified that nominations, appointments, and approvals must be carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures. He stressed the importance of acting impartially and without bias, asserting that the current case is not linked to religious or economic factors, but rather about upholding what is right.
Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun also shared his family’s historical connection to the Soun of Ogbomosho throne, highlighting that his great-grandfather served as the Soun of Ogbomosho from 1944 to 1952 and was buried in the palace. He pointed out that there is a 1953 law that states anyone whose father or grandfather was buried in the palace has the right to ascend to the throne. In this context, he claimed that the proper traditions and customs were not followed in the selection of Oba Ghandi.

Expressing concern, Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun stated that despite raising these issues, the government overlooked them. He also noted that Oba Afolabi Ghandi had not reached out to him for a discussion, adding that the palace must adhere to the court’s ruling before any further dialogue can take place.
The court’s decision to remove Oba Afolabi Ghandi as the Soun of Ogbomosho reflects the ongoing legal battle surrounding his appointment. As Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye Olaonipekun sheds light on the discrepancies in the selection process, the traditional institution and the government must address these concerns and ensure that the rightful protocols and procedures are observed in the appointment of the next Soun of Ogbomosho.
