Renowned human rights activist and social crusader, Alhaji Saka Waheed Adekunle, also known as Chairmans Mao, has voiced his skepticism regarding the Yoruba Nation movement spearheaded by Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho. In a recent interview on Politics Naija with Mogaji Olalekan Efficient on TungbaFM Network, Adekunle expressed his belief that the idea of Yoruba Nation is not well-thought-out and attributed its emergence to the precedents set by Nigerian leaders across all levels of governance.

Adekunle emphasized that while he understands the desire for self-determination among the Yoruba people, he firmly believes that Sunday Igboho is not the appropriate leader for such a movement. He argued that despite the talent and intellectual prowess within the Yoruba community, relying on figures like Igboho sends the wrong message and diminishes the potential for a successful secessionist movement.

“In his exact words, Yoruba people are too talented and possess numerous scholars who are more suitable to lead the Yoruba to a new nation, rather than individuals like Sunday Igboho,” Adekunle stated during the interview.

The criticism from Adekunle, who is widely respected for his advocacy in human rights circles, adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the Yoruba Nation agitation. While the movement has garnered significant support from various quarters, including within and outside Nigeria, Adekunle’s remarks highlight the diversity of opinions within the Yoruba community regarding the path to self-determination.

As discussions about the future of the Yoruba people continue to evolve, Adekunle’s comments serve as a reminder of the complexities inherent in movements for autonomy and the importance of careful deliberation in selecting leaders to spearhead such initiatives.
