Hon. Tambi Oluwagbemiga Criticizes Lagos State Assembly Over Suspension of Alimosho LG Chairman

Lagos, Nigeria – Hon. Tambi Oluwagbemiga, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kosofe Local Government, has publicly condemned the Lagos State House of Assembly for its recent decision to suspend Alimosho Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Jelili, over alleged misconduct.

In a phone conversation with starnigerianews.com, Oluwagbemiga argued that the actions of the State Assembly contravene the law, particularly in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed local government autonomy. He emphasized that while the Assembly has the authority to investigate issues within local governments, it lacks the legal basis to appoint the vice chairman as the substantive chairman during an ongoing investigation.

“The behavior of the State House of Assembly is not only questionable but also against the spirit of the law that grants local governments the independence to govern themselves,” Oluwagbemiga stated. “This kind of intervention undermines the autonomy we fought for.”

He called on the Assembly to respect the autonomy of local governments and to adhere to the judicial standards set by the Supreme Court. “Local government officials should be allowed to carry out their duties without undue interference from the state legislature,” he added.

The controversy surrounding Jelili’s suspension has sparked debates about the role and power dynamics between state authorities and local governance, with many calling for clearer guidelines to ensure that local governments can function effectively without external pressures.
