Yoruba Tradition was not Respected in Burial of Awujale – Chief Adeifa Iwalesin”

Chief Ifangelist Adeifa Iwalesin has expressed dissatisfaction with the burial process of the late Alayeluwa HRM Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, stating that it did not fully align with Yoruba traditional rites.

In an exclusive interview with StarNigeriaNews.com, Chief Adeifa emphasized that the manner of an individual’s burial does not absolve them of sins committed during their lifetime, noting that “there is no prayer for the dead again.” He further stressed that the Awujale, being a highly revered traditional ruler, should have been buried in accordance with Yoruba customs.

“You cannot pick an Oba in a traditional way and choose not to bury him in the way of tradition,” he said. “The preservation of Yoruba culture should be a top priority for everybody. The throne of the Awujale is an important throne in the Yoruba race, and it should be accorded such respect.”

The late Oba Adetona, who joined his ancestors recently, was one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Yorubaland, having ruled for over six decades. His burial has sparked discussions among traditionalists, with some, like Chief Adeifa, calling for stricter adherence to cultural practices in royal rites.

Chief Adeifa’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about the erosion of Yoruba traditions, particularly in the burial of prominent kings. He urged stakeholders to prioritize cultural preservation to maintain the dignity of Yoruba heritage.

As reactions trail the burial proceedings, traditional leaders and community members are expected to engage in further discourse on upholding indigenous customs in royal transitions.
