SDP Holds Successful Rivers State Congress, Unveils New Leadership Ahead of 2027
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has recorded a major milestone in Rivers State following the successful conduct of its State Congress over the weekend, signaling renewed momentum as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
The Congress, held at the party’s State Secretariat located at No. 155 Inko-Tariah Street, Rumuogba, Port Harcourt, attracted a large turnout of party faithful, stakeholders, and observers. The orderly and transparent process was widely seen as a demonstration of the party’s commitment to internal democracy and institutional discipline.
Presiding over the exercise, the Chairman and Returning Officer, Ugochukwu Hekerem, formally inaugurated the newly elected State Working Committee at the close of proceedings. He expressed confidence in the ability of the new leadership to foster unity, maintain party discipline, and drive the SDP’s vision forward in Rivers State.
Leading the newly inaugurated executive is Hon. Cotterell Tumbodiia as State Chairman, alongside Precious Opusunju as Deputy Chairman and Comrade Godswill Dugbo as State Secretary. Other key officials include Barinee Gift Oodee as State Treasurer, Hycient Kemdirm Ordu as State Organizing Secretary, and Speedwell Opuowubo as State Financial Secretary, among others.
Observers note that the emergence of the new leadership marks a critical step in repositioning the SDP as a viable political force in the state. The Congress is expected to strengthen grassroots mobilization, enhance internal cohesion, and present a credible alternative platform for the people.
Party stakeholders emphasized that the newly constituted leadership carries a renewed mandate built on trust, responsibility, and service to the people. They also reiterated the party’s resolve to deepen inclusiveness and integrity in its political engagements.
