The Ijebu Kingdom continues to mourn the passing of its revered monarch, Alayeluwa Kabiyesi Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, Ogbagba II, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025. Among the many dignitaries paying tribute is Alhaja Oluwo Oluwakemi Oyebowale, the Iyalaje Olopa Egbe Jagunmou Obinrin Akinle Ijebu Omooba, who has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the great king.

In a heartfelt statement made available to starnigerianew.com, Iyalaje Oyebowale described Oba Adetona as a visionary leader whose reign brought unprecedented development, unity, and cultural pride to Ijebuland.

“The passing of our beloved Kabiyesi is a profound loss not just to Ijebuland but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole. He was a father, a unifier, and a pillar of wisdom. His legacy of progress, education, and traditional excellence will forever be remembered,” she said.

Oba Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most influential monarchs. His burial, conducted in accordance with Ijebu traditional rites, was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and thousands of mourners.

As Ijebuland reflects on his remarkable life, Iyalaje Oyebowale urged the people to uphold his values of peace, development, and cultural preservation.

“Though Kabiyesi has ascended to join the ancestors, his spirit and works remain with us. We must continue to honor him by sustaining the progress he championed,” she added.

The late Awujale will be remembered for his fearless leadership, advocacy for education, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people. Plans for a state-organized memorial are underway as Nigeria bids farewell to one of its most iconic royal figures.
