Federal Executive Council Approves Disaster Relief Fund, Economic Bills, and Major Infrastructure Projects

Federal Executive Council Meeting Highlights – September 23, 2024

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened on September 23, 2024, to address critical national issues, following reports from Mr. Bayo Onanuga’s X handle, monitored by Starnigerianews.com.

Response to Flooding and Disaster Relief Fund

The Council discussed the severe flooding affecting various regions, particularly in Maiduguri, Borno State, where nearly half of the city has been damaged. In response, members supported the President’s initiative to create a Disaster Relief Fund, which will be financed through a portion of the Federation account and contributions from the private sector.

Dam Safety Assessments

A technical committee is set to conduct integrity tests on the Alau Dam and other dams nationwide to ensure their safety and operational integrity.

Economic Stabilization Bills Approved

The Council approved several Economic Stabilization Bills designed to reform income tax laws and boost the export of goods and services. Highlights include tax incentives for businesses creating jobs and personal income tax relief for workers. The bills also propose the suspension of certain taxes on small businesses and vulnerable populations, and will be forwarded to the National Assembly for further consideration.

Infrastructure Contracts

Key infrastructure contracts were awarded, including:

A 258 km 3-lane highway project between Kebbi and Sokoto states, part of a 1,000 km superhighway initiative.

An increase in the budget for the Bodo-Bonny Road project, now totaling N280 billion.

A revised contract for the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway, now set at N740.79 billion.

Additional road and bridge contracts valued at N133.4 billion awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited, as well as a N3.2 billion contract for repairs on the Gamboru Bridge in Borno State.

FCT Developments and National Symbols

The FEC also approved multiple projects within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including the construction of judges’ quarters and various road upgrades. Furthermore, the Council endorsed the standardization of national symbols, mandating that the first stanza of the National Anthem be recited at all official events, with the third stanza designated as the National Prayer.

These resolutions underscore the government’s commitment to addressing national challenges and enhancing infrastructure for economic development.
