The political scene in the United Kingdom was shaken on Thursday as the Deputy Prime Minister tendered her resignation after it emerged that she underpaid tax on a recently purchased property.

In her resignation statement, she admitted: “I accept that I did not meet the highest standards.”

The incident has reignited conversations back home in Nigeria, where citizens are questioning the opacity surrounding the assets of public office holders.

“How many properties do our politicians own? Are they paying the right taxes? Or don’t we deserve to know?” a concerned observer asked.

Critics argue that Nigeria operates a form of “opaque democracy” where vital information about the wealth and financial compliance of elected officials is shielded from the public. This lack of transparency, they say, has allowed corruption and abuse of office to thrive unchecked.

Commentators insist that no external force will rescue the country from entrenched impunity. Instead, they say, Nigerians must demand accountability and ensure that public office holders are held to the highest ethical standards.

“We have allowed them to get away with way too much,” another analyst warned, stressing that genuine reform requires citizens to insist on transparency, integrity, and consequences for misconducts
