Lagos Speaker Dismisses Retirement Rumors, Reaffirms Loyalty to Party
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed speculations about his retirement from politics, affirming that his relationship with fellow lawmakers remains strong and intact.
Hon Mudashiru Obasa, who appeared on TVC’s live programme Beyond Politics on Thursday, which was monitored by starnigerianews.com clarified that while he is mindful of life after public service, he is not stepping away from politics.
Responding to questions about his political future and possible governorship ambition, the Speaker said:
“No. What next? Life. I’ve just said, you know, there’s life ahead. So let’s contemplate living that life.”
Ahead of the interview, his Special Adviser, Hon. Niniola Adegoke, had hinted at the direction of the conversation, preparing the journalist for Obasa’s stance.
The Speaker stressed that while ambition is natural, ultimate decisions rest with the leadership of the political party.
“When we talk about politics, you have to be a member of a political party. And as a member, you must believe in the leadership of that party. At some point, you cannot determine what’s next for you on your own. Of course, you may aspire to become something, but you still have to respect the party and how it is managed.
“The party leaders will eventually sit down and decide who goes next. So, whether as a Speaker, Deputy Governor, Governor, or Senator, it’s all about consultation and engagement with party leaders. As an individual, you must align with the process,” Obasa explained.
He also described his relationship with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as cordial and rooted in the collective progress of Lagos State.
“He’s my brother, my colleague, my partner in progress. We’ve been together for a long time. Some of the people see us as a legacy, and we’re still doing it. He has been very active, working hard, serving the people,” Obasa added.
