The Chairman of Tungba Communication Limited, owners of Tungba100.9FM and Tungba90.3FM, Prince Gbolahan Odo, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of Arise News TV anchor, producer, and writer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as “Sommie.”
In a statement issued to the press and signed by the Group Program Manager, Olalekan Efficient, Prince Odo described the death of the young broadcaster as “a painful loss to the media industry and Nigeria at large.”
According to him, Sommie’s death is not only heartbreaking but also raises serious questions about the safety of young professionals pursuing their passion in the country. He condemned the act, urging security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure a full-scale investigation into the circumstances leading to her demise.
“It is saddening to imagine that such a young, promising, and talented lady could have her life cut short in this manner. Nigeria cannot afford to continue losing bright stars in such tragic circumstances. Justice must be done, and the perpetrators of this evil act must be brought to book,” the statement quoted Prince Odo as saying.
The media executive extended his condolences to Sommie’s immediate family, her colleagues at Arise News, and the Nigerian journalism community. He also expressed sympathy to millions of viewers and admirers who had grown to love her work and professionalism on screen.
Prince Odo further stressed that the death of Sommie should serve as a wake-up call to government agencies, law enforcement, and civil society to intensify efforts at safeguarding young people, particularly women, who face increasing risks in society.
“This is not only a loss to Arise News or the journalism profession, it is a national tragedy. Nigeria mourns with the Maduagwu family, and we at Tungba Communication Limited stand with them in this moment of grief,” he added.
