Balogun Market Inferno Claims Three Brothers as Omatu Family Announces Burial Plans
Tragedy struck the Omatu Ikwuamaeze family following the death of three brothers in a devastating fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria House, Balogun Market, Lagos Island.
The victims—Stephen Onyeka Omatu (40), Mr. Casmir Nnabuike Omatu (39) and Mr. Collins Kenechukwu Omatu (37) lost their lives on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, when a raging inferno engulfed parts of the popular commercial hub, throwing traders, families and residents into mourning.
In a burial a movement flier on social media, the family of late Sir Polycarp Omatu Ikwuamaeze, KSJI, and late Lady Justina Omatu Ikwuamaeze, KSJI, described the incident as a painful and irreparable loss, not only to the family but also to the wider community.
Announcing the burial arrangements, the family disclosed that a Parish Service of Songs and Requiem Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 5:00pm, at Jesus The Saviour Catholic Church, Ken Nlemedim Street, Bucknor, Ejigbo, Lagos.
The final Burial Mass and interment is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 10:00am, at the family compound, Nze Omatu Ikwuamaeze, Uzoakwa, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The burial flier circulating on social media signed by Rev. Fr. William Omatu on behalf of the family, who expressed deep appreciation for the prayers, support and solidarity shown by friends, associates and sympathizers from across Nigeria and beyond.
The unfortunate incident has once again highlighted the recurring menace of market fires in Lagos, renewing public concern over safety measures, infrastructure, and emergency response in major commercial centres.
The Omatu family concluded the announcement with prayers for the departed brothers, saying:
